Scouts don't walk on water they walk under it!!!

by Christopher McCrory

Cub Scouts from the 78th Lanarkshire (3rd Blantyre) recently completed the John Muir Discovery Award.

A total of 17 Cubs and 3 leaders completed all the criteria and are the first Cub pack in Scotland to complete this prestigious award.

The Cubs have been working on  the John Muir Award for the past 6 months and whilst completing the award have also completed several elements of the Cub Scout Challenge Award scheme as well as gaining Activity badges in the process.

The four elements for the John Muir Award are; Discover, Explore, Conserve and Share.

These requirements fit in easily with many of the values of our own awards scheme. The Discovery Award is suitable for Cubs upwards.

Working towards the award some of the activities  the Cubs completed were:-  building and placing bird boxes and bird feeders in local woodland, 'geocaching', fire lighting  skills, tree planting,  a residential experience and much more!  Thankfully the weather was kind to us and though we no rain that didn't stop the Cubs from doing their favourite thing - getting extremely muddy!!

3rd Blantyre Cub (78th Lanarkshire) recently enjoyed a weekend camping adventure at Lapwing lodge Scout centre. The pack camped under canvas for the weekend and were lucky with the weather as it stayed dry all weekend!

The Cubs enjoyed many activities during the weekend including, the high ropes course, archery, fire-lighting, Night hikes and wide games. Many scouting activities were undertaken and several Cubs met the criteria for the outdoor challenge with some completing the outdoor plus. On the Saturday evening Cubs enjoyed sharing a campfire with the 12th Ayrshire Scout Group.

This was a new adventure for several of our pack as for some it was their first experience of sleeping "under canvas" and for others their first "nights away" experience.

The 3rd Blantyre Cubs visited HMNB Clyde (Faslane) for their summer trip. The main part of the visit was a trip aboard HMS Victorious, which is a class submarine the carries the UK's nuclear deterrent.

After a short safety brief the Cubs made their way aboard  via a gangplank to take the first steps aboard.  A vertical ladder had to be descended to gain access and once aboard an extensive tour of the vessel began. Amongst the narrow passageways and ladders the Cubs gained a real feel for living and working aboard a nuclear submarine. They saw the galley, mess areas, control room, torpedoes and the missile tubes.

The Cubs then had a short tour of the base and also got to eat their lunch in the mess hall.

This was an exciting and educational visit for the Cubs which was enjoyed by all. No pictures were taken during the tour for security reasons but we did get some by the HMS Neptune flagpole.

Beavers from East Kilbride, Hamilton and Uddingston had a great day out at Blairdrummond Safari Park.  While it was wet to start off

the sun soon came through and great fun was had by all.

Colonies came together for lunch and in the tradition of birthday parties a fantastic cake supplied by Tunnocks was cut and demolished after the candles were successfully blown out.

Weekend of 23rd - 25th September 2011 saw 26 Scouts and 5 Leaders from four different Scout Groups within the District, visit Bonaly

Scout Outdoor Centre, for a 'Back-to-Basics' camp.

We were inspired to run this camp on reading in the papers about how little to-days kids know about basics skills such as:

- Tying Knots

- Building Survival Shelters from your surroundings

- Building/Lighting fires Safely

- Cooking on open fires

- How to use an Axe & Saw safely to get your wood for fires

- Basic First Aid Skills - how to treat wounds etc...

- Even how to put up a tent

Groups & Leaders who attended were:

2nd Uddingston Scout Group = Andrew Swann (Camp Leader, Organiser of Camp)

140th Lanarkshire Scout Group, (St, Mary's, Hamilton) = Ruth Stannage (Organiser of Camp), Malcolm Colthart

6th East Kilbride Scout Group = John Anderson

2nd Bothwell Scout Group = Donald Wilson

Scouts did the following:

- Pitched their tents

- Cooked Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

- Learned First Aid

- Learned Map & Compass work

- Learned Axe & Saw work

- Learned Backwoods Cooking (Cooking on an open fire)

- Learned how to put up an old fashioned tent correctly

- Played a lot of games = Capture the Flag, Generals etc

For some of the Scouts this was their first camp and 'nights away'.  They really enjoyed it.  One of the best parts was the campfire on the Saturday night, when the whole campsite 130 people turned up and took part.

"The camp was great fun.  We learned so many useful things from the Leaders, Swanny and all the other leaders were brilliant, The Campfire was awesome, loads of people were there, can't wait till the next camp".    Quote from a Scout

"I would like to thank all the leaders who assisted for their help and support as this was the first camp i have organised" - Quote from Andrew 'Swanny' Swann
